Walking round Thorney Island

Emsworth is not so well known as the rest of the south coast resorts, yet it's a gem of a place with lots of independent shops, including a fabulous greengrocer, a butcher's, newsagents, pubs, restaurants, a monthly market, a harbour and Thorney Island lies adjacent to it. Thorney Island has belonged to the Ministry of Defence since 1938, but there's a great path around the edge of it with marvellous views and lots of bird life and seals on a good day. The walk round Thorney Island an easy walk and well worth doing.

The island is bounded by raised walkways around much of the way because it is low lying. Recent storms have caused some of the fortifications to collapse into the sea
Looking up and down one of the beaches, it's potentially wonderfully peaceful, but Lyn and I walked last Sunday when there were various noisy things flying above us!
Here's the church of St.Nicholas along the eastern side of the island
Another view of the mudflats with the tide retreating far out.
Finally one of the maps at Thornham Point by the east gate where you have to buzz the bell at the gate to be allowed out.
We walked the anti clockwise path which is the one in blue, and the same as the clockwise path which is in red! I last wrote about this walk in 2017, with a slightly different angle obviously: Walking Round Thorney Island (kasmaty.blogspot.com)
