This is the press release:Swindon’s Newest Walking Trail To Officially Launch on Saturday 9th April
Swindon’s newest walking route, the South Swindon Green Trail, will be officially launched on Saturday with residents attending being able to join the inaugural walk of the trail.
Residents, Councillors and Parish Officers will be meeting at the Shaftesbury Lake noticeboard on the Park South side of the lake at 10am on Saturday 9th April where the trail’s Information Board has recently been installed. At 10am the new Information Board will be formally unveiled which will start the walk. Residents will walk the circular route and then finish at the same Shaftesbury Lake Information Board. Following completion of the walk, walkers are invited for lunch and refreshments at the Richard Jefferies Museum, Marlborough Road, Coate, Swindon SN3 6AA
Created in 2022 by South Swindon Parish Council for recreation and conservation purposes, the South Swindon Green Trail roughly follows the boundary of the South Swindon Parish. The circular route is approximately 8 miles / 13 km starting at Shaftesbury Lake, through to Coate Water, Croft Wood, East Wichel, Rushey Platt, Cambria Bridge, the Town Centre, Fleming Way, Magic Roundabout and Marlowe Avenue. The Green Trail explores historical transport links, local history and the natural world of South Swindon, and has been designed to be enjoyed as a complete circuit, or in sections with alternative routes suggested from each.
2 Information Boards are provided along the route. One at Shaftesbury Lake (where the Green Trail Launch will start) and another at Cambria Bridge Road. There are waymarkings along the route identifying the direction walkers need to go, which includes a QR code which allows walkers immediate access once scanned to the Parish Council’s dedicated webpage for the Green Trail, which provides a map of the route and lots of information about what people see along the route: https://southswindon-pc.gov.uk/south-swindon-green-trail
After the walk lunch and drinks refreshments will be provided at the Richard Jefferies Museum, starting from 12.30.
Residents, journalists and photographers are all most than welcome to walk the whole or part of Green Trail, but if you’re unable to dedicate the time for this please join us for the formal opening of the trail at Shaftesbury Lake at 10am. Please confirm to Matt if you are planning to attend and if will be attending with other guests so we have an idea of numbers.
Please find attached an image of the Waymarking that are dotted along the Green Trail route.
The Parish Council’s Chair, Cllr Chris Watts, said:
“The Parish Council is proud to be launching Swindon’s newest walking trail. Creating this walk has been 3 years in the making and is designed to offer a leisure activity for residents while walking through the best sites in South Swindon. People who have helped us develop this walking route include former grounds maintenance managers at Swindon Borough Council who have offered a wealth of historical information about the route and a local graphic designer who has made the route as interactive and user-friendly as possible. We have also done a huge amount of work along the route to make it more accessible to people and we look forward to explaining this as we go along.
We encourage all residents to join us on this inaugural walk of the trail. The weather looks set to be lovely on Saturday so residents will be able to get some leisure activity in with some nice weather, whilst learning about the hidden treasures of South Swindon.”
ENDS.
