Green Trail Official Opening 9 April

The South Swindon Green Trail is due to be officially opened on Saturday 9 April at 10am. It's a circular trail of almost 9 miles around south Swindon parish, so you could start the walk at the nearest point to where you live and walk the trail until you get back to where you started! We are hoping at the opening to gather at Shaftesbury Lake where there will be an information board marking the 'start' of the trail, and then walk in a clockwise direction, ending up together we hope for a lunch at the Richard Jefferies museum around 1pm.

Wanting to gauge the feasibility of these plans, I walked round yesterday with my daughter, thanks go to her for the stats I have on the walk. I initially thought it was 8 miles, but it's bit more. Anyway here is the map:

There will be detailed maps on the website soon, there are waymarkers and descriptions on the route
It's interesting to see how our pace changed slightly over the walk
I also took a few photos as it was a beautiful day and there was some fantastic blossom around, and wonderful blue skies:
These photos were taken in an area I've never been to before, north of Shaftesbury Lake
These trees were a fabulous colour
and more trees and wildness
As we made our way towards the Magic Roundabout besdie the old canal, the crocuses were beautiful
Here's an example of a QR code on a waymarker on the route
These crocuses were at Intel, but worthy of inclusion I thought

So there we are, a wonderful circular Green Trail, with lots of history attached to many of the routes. Do come along to the opening even if you feel you don't want to walk the whole route.

  1. Are there details on the official opening anywhere? I couldn't see it on the parish council trail page, nor any event on their Facebook page.

    1. The website has been updated to give the maps, but the opening hasn't been added yet. It will be when we have run the volunteer day.
