West Dean Gardens

It's difficult to subdue the superlatives when talking about West Dean Gardens, they have a magnificent hard landscaping, and have always had innovative and interesting planting. So how do the gardens look under the management of newish head gardener Tom Brown? He's had plenty of challenges with lockdown announced just after he took over.

The greenhouses always remind my of Ravilious' paintings in greenhouses, he had a much more muted palate than the greenhouse above which is exuberance personified. It is fantastic, the greenhouses were particularly well maintained with great thought given to the displays.
The borders also looked really good, but they are harder to photograph, I looked and failed to find the only acceptable golden rod in my opinion, it has a lighter part to the flower and was seen in this border two years ago.
Following the trend in the nicest possible way, the grass in the orchard has become a meadow with lots of blue geraniums in there
Well isn't this a monster bug house and isn't it lovely?
Above a fuchsia and possibly streptocarpus greenhouse, absolutely lovely
This is maybe ferns and strptocarpus
and here's an example of an extremely floriferous streptocarpus
Above outdoor succulents were grouped together in a couple of places and looked great
Mmm the vegetable gardens looked fantastic
And here's another long border by the vegetable garden
I always love this view whatever the season
Fab tagetes protecting the brassicas seen below
The cutting beds by the greenhouses always look fabulous, people were queuing up to take photos
Alstromeria looked fab, they're a new passion of mine
I do like the small tender geraniums
and lastly the purple leaved basil was huge!!
After looking round, we went to the cafe for lunch, lovely food and excellent service. Well worth the trip out there. Not far from Emsworth of course!
