Emsworth and Pallant House Gallery

On a recent visit to Emsworth, I was struck once again how fabulous it is to be beside the sea, whether visiting or living there. I was visiting and while there walked around by Thorney Island and also visited Pallant House Gallery to see the Ben Nicholson exhibition.

I'll add a couple of photos taken on a walk from Emsworth, classic walking along the shoreline:

and a boatyard:

and then to visit Pallant House Gallery, their strap line is 'bringing our art to you', we started looking round the permanent collection displays, and interestingly there is a section of their website where people who have left bequests, and current benefactors are acknowledged.

I took three photos of work in the permanent collection because photography isn't allowed in the main exhibition, above is the magnificent painting by Michael Andrews: 'Thames Painting: The Estuary' 1994-5, so big that it's hard to photograph, and so magnificent, it takes a while before you can move on from it in the gallery.
Above, I love this 'View Across Frognal Lane' by William Coldstream, painted in 1971, both of these paintings were acquired via the Wilson Gift through the Art Fund. It's well worth clicking on the link to find out more about this gift and the works acquired.
Above the 'Afro Harlem Muses' 2005 a lithograph on paper by Chris Ofili part of the Golder-Thompson Gift 2020, more on the Golder-Thompson gift here

And here's the poster for the Ben Nicholson exhibition, the exhibition is a lovely mixture of artefacts from his studio and paintings he produced, work has been borrowed from many collectors and galleries. It's amazing how many jugs and glasses have been kept from the 1920s.

Although 'Roman Window' by Michael Ayrton has been loaned to The Lightbox exhibition, 'our' Nicholson didn't appear to ahve been loaned for this exhibition. Here ours to remind you:

It's entitled: 1933 (Composition in black and white)
