Community Gardening at Broadgreen

The latest bit of South Swindon Parish community gardening took place last Saturday when an overgrown planter was emptied of its ground elder, nettles and bindweed and planted up with a few perennials I thought might be suitable, and a row of beetroot around the edge. Around Old Town, I think the OTRA Gardening group have made a positive difference to our environment by gardening. I'm hoping the Fishing for the Moon garden will soon have its own group of local gardeners, so the next place to move onto with excellent motivator, Andy Barnes was Broadgreen which was subject to traffic calming and improvement measures some years ago, now ready for a revamp. There has been a local group working on the planters, so keen not to tread on any toes, I rang Pam Freeguard who has been involved in community gardening there. Pam was happy for a team to clear out the brick planter, and said she come and offer encouragement, she can be seen below between Cllr John Firmin and Andy Barnes behind the weeded planter.

Here's another view

and this is what we started with:

I went to check up on the planter yesterday, a sedum had been pulled out of the ground and a meadow sweet flower had been broken off, but otherwise everything was OK. More plants are needed in there, but this was a start. We're looking for volunteers to form a working party to do more work in the Broadgreen area, so if you are interested please leave a message here or email the parish office on:
