The Charity Art Auction at the Town Gardens Bowl

Two weeks ago I wrote encouraging people to come to the Charity Art Auction in this post, I thought it might be a good idea to let you know how it went. Three of us meticulously planned the event, and despite the short lead in time, I think we achieved a smoothly running event by holding meetings every other day.

The weather was always going to be a challenge because the event was being held outside in the Bowl under huge open sided tents, this, plus the fact that the Bowl is not known for its efficient drainage system, we dreaded heavy rain. We did get heavy rain on the night, but only for half an hour before the event happened, when we were trying to organise the artworks. After that it was fine and quite warm.

We had 32 artworks to auction, so divided the auction into two halves with a break in the middle, with the lawn mower being included in the auction rather than the raffle. Neil Hopkins kindly made sausage rolls and ciabatta for everyone, and there was waitress service for drinks. Bidding went really well,  Jeremy Holt was an excellent auctioneer, and did a very good job of achieving excellent prices for the lots, raising a fabulous £4521 for the NSPCC and CALM charities.

Photographs used in this post were kindly taken by Angela Atkinson who had a ringside seat; and also Jane Milner-Barry who had the idea of holding an auction to raise money for charity, and did a lot of the organising. Thank you to both of you, my phone was on card payment duties all evening.

I think this is my favourite photo of the night. It shows Jeremy in action at the microphone on a stage, and me rootling through notes I had taken on each artist.

Above a view taken from inside the big tent of the auction taking place. What would we have done if it had rained during proceedings?
As it began to get dark, the Bowl lighting came on and everything became even more magical, including the stage below.
I rather liked this inside the tent
And here's another view taken from the entrance.
Special thanks go to all the artists who donated work for this fantastic event, it took a while to find a suitable venue after Covid struck, but thanks to Tom Falding and his wonderful organisation of things, we all felt safe and had a great evening. There are still a few events taking place at The Bowl, click here to find out more
