Penshurst Place and Gardens

This was the last place we visited on our way back home from Tonbridge. Penshurst is a lovely Kent garden, now apparently in its 678th year, the house, gardens and surrounding estate were granted to the Sidney family in 1552, in whose safe hands it remains today- lived in and cared for by Viscount and Viscountess De L'Isle and their family.Horticultural records date back to 1346 apparently.
We wandered round the gardens, had lunch in the cafe, looked at the plant sales and came back home.
Here are a few photos:
I liked this sculpture, it was the first thing we saw as we entered the garden.
Below is a photo of the union flag garden, just before the flowers have opened, so it's a bit hard to imagine!
 This looked lovely
The peonies were fantastic, after they've flowered these beds must look a bit dull. When we were there, someone was dead heading them, and removing bindweed, almost a day's job I should think.
Neat hedges and rather lovely vistas were a feature of the garden.
 Creeping thyme looked fantastic
Standard roses underplanted with trimmed lamb's ears was a triumph of ingenuity
 A view of the house
Below I think this is the Italian Garden
and here's a snippet from Gertrude Jekyll's book 'Some English Gardens' which featured this photo taken in the garden.
Last but by no means least, there were some great planters.
