Yorkshire Sculpture Park

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is easily reached from Wakefield, so it's perfect to visit in addition to the Hepworth on the same day. In fact the Yorkshire Triangle also includes Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute as places to see in Yorkshire..
I visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park after the Hepworth at Wakefield, and although only a short drive away, it's a lot to take in two venues with lots to see, also the weather closed in a bit in the afternoon with light drizzle and low levels of visibility. It was late afternoon by the time we arrived, so I paid for two hours parking only, in the knowledge that we were only going to see some of what was available. Our first visit was to the Underground Gallery where there was an exhibition entitled A Tree in the Wood. I was particularly interested in this section of a tree stripped back to a particular year in the life of the tree. 'Matrice' is an entire bisected pine tree, placed horizontally with its narrowest ends facing one another across the central space. The body of the tree has been hollowed out and carved to follow one of its growth rings, thereby capturing a particular moment in its life and reflecting Penone's interest in transience, the flow of time and life cycles.'
There are over 80 sculptures in the park at any one time, and although it was drizzly, we walked around the lake and looked for sculptures. The one below is one of a series of huge heads made by Jaune Plensa, this one is 'Wilsis'.
it's beautifully positioned by the lake
Having walked round the lake, we came across an impressive Antony Gormley figure on an old tree stump, it's called  'One & Other' .
This piece below is part of the Sean Scully Inside Outside exhibition, it's an impressive stone construction.
This piece entitled  'People 15' is by Julian Opie and an attempt to bring the urban environment into the sculpture park,
I tried to take photographs to show how good it is, but they proved elusive. It was visible from quite a long way off, and works really well.
The YSP is just up the M1, so very accessible, and the only charge made for this fabulous place, is to park your car. Definitely worth a day's visit.
