Chedworth Roman Villa

Chedworth Roman Villa is in a perfectly situated spot, hidden away in a valley north west of  Cirencester. There's something for everyone, and plenty of people on the site to answer questions. When I took my friends along, they were very pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see, how  informative our introductory talk was, in such a perfect setting teeming with birds.
As you enter the site, there's a plan of what the villa would have been like when it was built, we looked at this as we were given the introductory talk beside the communal Roman toilets.
From there we walked into the covered areas where you can see the mosaics.
I bought a book on Chedworth, but can't now find it, so until I do, I can't add much of interest to the photos I took.
I liked the Latin names used, reminding us how helpful it is for understanding our own language. My first photo is of the floor in the frigidarium- 'a space to cool off'
which was next to the tepidarium- a 'space for rubbing down with oil and plucking body hair'
Beyond the cold and warm rooms, were other places, including a dining room with a huge mosaic floor with patterns and
amorous scenes depicted, below you can see two people kissing
and here someone with a spear
The mosaics are fantastic, in much better condition than I expected.
From there we walked outside to look at the spring supplying the site, and got a photo of one of the many pheasants in full mating colours on top of the wall by the spring
and here's the pool the spring runs into.
After walking round the rest of the site, and into the museum containing some Roman artefacts and other things found on the site, we bought things in the shop, had a coffee in the excellent cafe and found The Mill Inn at Withington where we had a great lunch and some fine ale.
There was lots of entertaining water flowing through the garden as you would expect given the name of the pub.
A quick photo of the outside of the pub:
