Bacon to Doig - Modern Masterpieces from a Private Collection

I was intrigued by this title, I love the idea of seeing a personal collection. This exhibition is on display at the Museum of Wales in Cardiff until January 2018,
Collectors Ian and Mercedes Stoutzker have loaned their stunning private collection of 20th Century art to National Museum Wales.
The Bacon to Doig exhibition contains works by artists including Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud and David Hockney, collected since the early 1960s.
Mercedes Stoutzker explains how she started collecting in the early parts of the careers of some of Britain's best known contemporary artists:

Photographs weren't allowed of individual works, so I'll start with the banner outside the building:
I then took a photo inside the exhibition to give an idea of the size of the gallery.

There's a lot more to look at in the museum, there's a great ceramics collection, some of which was on display, those of you familiar with ceramics in the Swindon Collection will recognise pieces by Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, favourites of Anita Besson:
National museum Wales and the Derek Williams Trust acquired important ceramics from Galerie Besson, opened in London by Anita Besson in London in 1988. Anita Besson was excited by the ambitious development of the ceramics collection in Cardiff, and decided to bequeath her own collection to the Derek Williams Trust so it could be displayed in Cardiff.
We then selected a few choice things to photograph

I do love this Augustus John painting of Dorelia McNeill
and this Stanley Spencer painting called 'Souvenir of Switzerland, commissioned by Edward Beddington-Behrens, a banker and collector of modern art, he invited Spencer to stay with him in southern Switzerland.
This Lowry is called 'Six Bells, Abertillery, south Wales and was painted in 1962.
I really liked a couple of Kyffin Williams paintings as well, this one painted in 1995 is called 'Storm, Porth Cwyfan'
and this one 'Anglesey cottages with cattle' reminds me very much of a cottage I used to live in on Anglesey
I loved this William de Morgan plate, a beautiful piece
When we came out of the museum, there was a spectacular sunset, a dramatic end to a lovely day
I thought I'd include a photo of Jay and Kathy despite the fact it's a bit 'bleached out'
If you can pay a visit to the museum and gallery, it's well worth it.
