Autumn Tidy and Bulb Planting

For several years the local residents' association, once called Pipers Area, now called Old Town Residents' Assocation, OTRA, have improved the area by creating flower beds and planting them with a mixture of perennials, bulbs and some annuals. We get together during a Sunday in May to prepare the beds for summer, and in October for tidying and cutting back. We started with the ivy ridden bed on the corner of Newport Street and Devizes Road, a challenging bed because of the exposed position and silver birch tree.which takes water and nutrients from the plants.
We have another bed opposite Earle's Newsagents under the Decaux hoarding on Station Approach, this one is the easiest to maintain because it's the nearest to my house.
Here are Kareen Boyd, and Councillors Nadine Watts and Jane Milner-Barry photographed at that bed
Here's another one with Nadine and Jane together
Here's the area, it's comprised of grass surrounded by perennials
We also have planted up the bed behind the bus stop at the Co-op and the smaller bed nearer the petrol station.
Another area we have created, is a bed by the Marriott roundabout, where originally there was a sign and some leylandii, fortunately we managed to get a tree surgeon to fell the leylandii
you can just see the leylandii on the ground at the back of the bed
A few Violas were planted under the road signs:

We have decided to improve the look of the entrance to the Lawns from the High Street, so planted bulbs in the grass on either side of the path, these should look fabulous in the spring. The job was much harder than we anticipated!

But as ever really good fun. We allowed 2 hours for bulb planting and another 2 hours for working on our flower beds
After the bulb planting, we went and tidied up the Mr Cod bed on Victoria Hill, there's still more work to do there, but it's much improved with some reduction in the shrubbery and planting of Phormiums among other things:
Lots of us worked on the bed

It's looking a lot better than it did, but needs litter removing on a regular basis.
