Compton Acres set in 10 acres of undulating ground in Poole was set up in 1920 by Thomas Simpson. At that time, the sea would have been probably visible from some parts of the garden, now obscured by trees. It is one of the most important ornamental gardens in England. Their website describes it as a horticultural paradise, and I think they certainly have embraced many gardening styles, including the stunning Italian Gardens with great organisation and symmetry as seen below. At the end of the water, there's a statue of Bacchus in his domed temple. There are also wrestlers of Herculaneum and original Venetian bronze lanterns.
You can also see the water lilies are arranged symetrically and there are huge carp in the waterA Wooded Garden with a huge waterfall reminding visitors of the vertiginous nature of the site
and a Heather Garden which I didn't photograph.
Other things to see are a fantastic range of plants for sale, a shop selling gardening and other accessories and there's a cafe.
