Standen House

' Standen House is an Arts and Crafts family home with Morris and Co. interiors set in a beautiful hillside garden.' It's a National Trust property so we were able to make excellent us of our membership. I bought a wonderful book called 'William Morris's Flowers' which gives lots of information about his beautiful botanic inspired fabrics and wallpapers.

The trees looked wonderful from the garden
Here's the outside of the house
and another view of the garden
There were William de Morgan tiles
Below a view of the interior where all materials were of Morris design
Below Jane Morris by D G Rossetti
In 1862 Morris designed his first wallpaper, Trellis, seen below. The pattern features a neatly squared wooden trellis covered with pretty pink roses , small insects and blue birds (drawn by Philip Webb)

Below a photo of the inside of a Chinese bowl. I liked the fish and the colours.
This design with daffodils was one I hadn't noticed before. It's called Daffodil and designed by John Henry Dearle and manufactured by Morris and Co. After Morris's death, Dearle became Artistic Director of Morris and Co. creating some of its best loved patterns.
We did try and visit The Priest House but the area was beset by road works and we returned to nearby Wakehurst for a second visit.
