Stockton Bury Garden

Not only did we find ourselves in a beautiful spot in rural Herefordshire for this year's Garden Tour when we booked rooms at The Grove near Kimbolton, we also discovered there were two gardens within walking distance. On the first morning of the holiday, we set off for the nearest garden; Stockton Bury Garden. Like many gardens we were to visit, this was a four acre garden with many different areas and interesting features and very well thought out and immaculately maintained in a wild sort of way. It has been developed from pasture 45 years ago by Raymond Treasure and Gordon Fenn, and is still maintained by them and Raymond niece, Tamsin. We were welcomed in the reception area by Tamsin  who knows the garden intimately and has written a book called Diary of a Modern Gardener for sale in the well stocked shop. The book gives a fascinating insight into the maintaining of the garden over a year.

The first photograph shows the many plants flowering at one end of the garden by the ponds, and below there's a view of hydrangea covering a wall beside the shop

It's possible to walk around the house and peer into this indoor small pool beside the house with an adjoining sauna installed in 2007 if that's what MMVII represents
This is a lovely seating area behind the house with some delicate flower paintings on the walls of passion flowers, foxgloves, wisteria, honeysuckle, morning glory, rose hips and irises. I should have taken close up photos of these paintings
This is a view in one of the glasshouses with spectacular fuchsia and coleus
Below purple loosestrife beside the pond
A sundial besdie the flower painted seat seen above, I htink

This is a photo taken in the cave area
and here's the cave with its dripping water
There's also a hidden part of the garden easily missed
with an imported ruin
and a glorious clematis
As can be seen, I went on and on taking photographs in this beautiful garden which ranks as one of the top 20 gardens in the country
Towards the end of the tour of the garden, we visited the pigeon lofts
above the roof and below the sides of the loft
Stockton Bury Gardens are well worth a visit for inspiration and entertainment. There's also a lovely tea room run by Tamsin's sister
