Staying in Sidmouth, walking the coastal path

Unlike our last trip to Sidmouth two weeks ago, this time we stayed at The Elizabeth Hotel on the sea front, a very comfortable hotel with great views and a fabulous breakfast. With the sea crashing onto the shore, there's always something to watch and listen to on Sidmouth Sea front. There is also the most amazing range of shops, independent and chains, and a department store called Field's, where there is every sort of shopping experience you could want. Views from the sea front are stunning, whether it's to the nearby headland:

or the sea
or a sunset, and of course sunsets are remarkably early in November
after a meal out, we discovered the tide was right in and up against the sea wall. You might get an impression of how exciting this was from the photo below:
Sunday morning dawned bright and clear, this is just after sunrise:
We walked along the coastal path from Sidmouth to Budleigh Salterton, passing Ladram Bay, seen below, on the way, taking the coastal path beside the sea

When the coastal path reaches the mouth of the river Otter, Budleigh Salterton is on the other side of the river, we followed the coastal path along the river until we reached the bridge which crosses the river. Instead of continuing along the coastal path, we headed north to Otterton along a very old tarmaced track. The first experience of Otterton from the track is not very welcoming, the first sign says 'Pick up your dog shit', this is followed by several 'No Parking' signs along the road, although there seems to be no reason why parking isn't allowed, there are no yellow lines for example. Walking down into the village, the signs disappear and Otterton becomes a charming East Devon village. The day was drawing in as we passed the pub, so reluctantly we walked on and back to Sidmouth along a series of by ways. In all, the walk covered almost 15 miles, and I'd highly recommend it.

I'm not sure the map works particularly well but gives an idea of where we walked. The numbers refer to someone else's walk
