Cap Canaille- highest sea cliff in Europe

On our third day, we walked from Cassis to Cap Canaille looking forward to views over Cassis and the Calanques where we were the previous day. From Cassis, we headed towards La Ciotat on the Route des CrĂȘtes, ' dotted with panoramic viewpoints created to enjoy the mountains in the Cap Canaille massif, with spectacular cliffs (the highest in France) overlooking the sea. The word ''canaille'' comes from the Latin Canalis mons, ''the mountain of the waters'', due to the aqueducts built by the Romans to channel its fresh water.' With thanks to the Michelin Guide for that information.
On the way, before the road started to climb, we had a look at the Plage de Corton beach, we didn't think it was as easy to swim there as Bestouan. The sea was a bit rough that day.
From the beach we walked along a small road climbing steeply and getting excellent views
At the T junction, we turned right onto a busier road, Route des Crete, and carried on along the road until we got the chance to turn right, and then joined a track peeling off to the right. The track is also called Route des Crete, and from the track, there are fabulous views
You can see the limestone cliffs here

when we got to the top, the views over the edge were fantastic.
It was possible to drive along the road, park your car and look over the edge of Cap Canaille as we did having had a really good walk up there. The map shows the two routes.
It is worth effort to get these views, there were people standing far too close to the edge!
