Fitzwilliam Museum visit

Cambridge is also home to the fabulous Fitzwilliam Museum, after visiting Kettle's Yard, we had lunch in a local pub, and then went to have a look round the Fitzwilliam. There's so much there to see, that I have just picked out a few favourite pieces. There's always a great allure to something really old, especially when it tells a story. This painted limestone relief is so beautiful, it depicts a genet, a now extinct cat-like carnivore. Genets will take young chicks from bird's nests as shown here. The relief comes from the funerary temple of King Montuhotep II, who brought Egypt back under control of a single king after a time of disunity. It dates from 2170-2119BC.
I do love the shape of Kate Malone's Baby Bud/Pumpkin Box
I love Iznik tiles, this one is a Syrian one from Damascus c 1550-1600
and there's a whole cabinet of them at the Fitzwilliam
And this is wonderful, John Everett Millais depiction of twins Kate and Grace Hoare in 1876, they were the daughters of a wealthy paint and varnish manufacturer.
Looking up at the ceiling above the stairs I loved the caryatids holding up the roof, below a close up
and below just visible near the windows in the roof
and as we left the Fitzwilliam, this illuminated pineapple looked fabulous.
Other notable sights included The Great Gate at Christ's College.
and the River Cam looks very scenic
 particularly when punts are involved
This is Magdalene College, overlooking the scene above.
