OTRA Gardens January Gardening

In order to avoid a last minute rush to tidy the 6 OTRA gardens before the South West in Bloom inspection in the summer, we're meeting more regularly and hoping to put on a more impressive showing this summer. Richard Beale who judged the gardens last year gave helpful pointers for improving our performance this year which we're attempting to implement.
Our first session of 2019 took place last Sunday, 27 January at the flower bed on Victoria Hill affectionately known as the Mr Cod bed because it's beside a takeaway shop of that name. The aim of the visit was to remove all litter from the site, both on the bed and the paved area in front of it, to dig up dandelions, clear the bed behind the benches, plant a few pansies, violas, primroses and narcissi, and finally to add chipped bark to the beds. We achieved most of that, although another 2 bags of chipped bark are needed to achieve a really good effect.
Here's the team after we've done the work:
I took before photos with litter, but I'm not going to add those, everyone knows what litter looks like. Instead I'll start with some beautiful primroses given to us last year by a kind friend, they were looking lovely last Sunday. I hope they have survived the snow.
This photo below shows how wonderfully clear of weeds the bed behind the benches is, you might just be able to see pansies and violas in there. What is also glaringly obvious is the wall behind the bed, I'm hoping we can do something with that to make it look better.
Here's a general view of the bed with dead bits trimmed off perennials and some bark laid
The photo below shows a newly created small bed below a large shrub that I cut back.
The photo below doesn't look like much, but shows what might be a wonderful show of daffodils in a few weeks time.
A big thank you to the lovely people at Longs Bar who offered us reviving cups of tea.
And also another big thank you to Rose Earle of Earle's newsagents for supplying the most wonderful plants. I took some photos of the displays outside the shop on the morning of the tidy up:
 So lovely
and I liked this close up of some pansies.
Our next tidying is on Sunday 24 February at 10.30am, this time at the flower bed near Pipers Way roundabout, near the Marriott. All welcome.
