A Trip to Pallant House Gallery

On a recent visit to Emsworth recently, we started the weekend by going on the bus to Chichester to visit the latest exhibitions at Pallant House Gallery. As usual there's so much to see at PHG that there's something for everyone. We began looking round in the De'Longhi Print Room where there's a Norman Ackroyd exhibition of monochrome etchings which 'capture the drama and spirit of Britain's most remote locations'.
I chose this etching of Silbury Hill from 2003, presented to PHG this year to photograph to give an example of Norman Ackroy's etchings.
I also loved this picture, Topley Pike by Karl Hagedorn. The exhibition is part of one called 'Rhythmical Expressions, and 'represent some of the earliest and boldest examples of post-impressionist work produced in Britain'. I also loved this Portrait of a Woman.
The exhibition in the main gallery features Julian Trevelyan RA (1910-1988) .There are over 100 paintings and prints in the exhibition including 'our' painting, The Potteries painted in 1938, on loan from Swindon Museum and Art Gallery was described as 'the best Trevelyan painting' by one of the speakers giving a talk about the exhibition recently.
As ever the Pallant House Gallery was well worth a visit, and having joined the Friends, I get free entry to the exhibitions. It's also well worth visiting the shop which has a tremendous selection of books, prints and postcards.
