Lunch at Beckhampton

Entertaining friends is always a pleasant challenge, it's important to do a bit of planning beforehand with an OS map and a bus timetable if a pub visit is involved. I love going on the number 49 bus and getting off at Avebury, walking round the stones and having lunch in the Red Lion, but for something a bit different, it's worth staying on the bus until after the Beckhampton roundabout, then walking through the hidden village of Beckhampton, up the steps to the road, and crossing to reach the Waggon and Horses a lovely 400 year old pub which serves excellent food. From there we walked along a footpath behind the pub, here are Jay and Kathy on the footpath, although we haven't officially celebrated in any way, Jay and I have been friends for 60 years, and I've known Kathy almost as long.
I like this photo as well, it typical of our days out when things are often very amusing and silly
The footpath led to Longstones Cove and Beckhampton Avenue where we came across two large standing stones, known as Adam and Eve, they are the only visible remains of the major ceremonial avenue of standing stones which led from the henge at Avebury.
Adam is the chunky stone on the left, and as we walked towards Avebury Trusloe, we got another view of the stones, and a lovely sky colouration
The beech trees still had leaves on
with subtle shades of yellow and brown
There are wonderful capped stone walls in Avebury Trusloe
 Some gorgeous lichens and mosses
and then a lovely view of Avebury church between the trees
and then over the bridge into Avebury
Beckhampton is well worth a visit, and a very pleasant walk back to Avebury
