The Anglesey coastal path south of Aberffraw takes an inland route through Llangadwaladr and Hermon onto Malltraeth. As one approaches Malltraeth, the path takes a route along the end of gardens before emerging into the village itself where we were 5 minutes too late to buy something from the village shop before it closed. The estuary at Malltraeth is large, but used to be much larger, reaching inland for 12 miles, to the outskirts of Llangefni. Much of this land has now been reclaimed by means of a seawall or 'cob' which spans the estuary between Malltraeth and Newborough Forest, a distance of about a mile. The estuary is very important for many species of wild fowl. Charles Tunnicliffe, the late wildlife illustrator lived at 'Shorelands', a house overlooking the estuary in a fabulous position.
Conditions crossing the cob were challenging, very windy with some showers. The sun shone on us however as we ate sandwiches at a bench in Newborough Forest hoping to walk along the coastal path through the forest to Llanddwyn Island. The forest is larger than it looks, we didn't reach Llanddwyn Island, but had to cut back through the woods when not far away from it, concerned that we wouldn't make it back to Aberffraw before dark.
Because of the wind, rain and distances covered, I took two photos only in the forest, during a sunny interlude
and one of two purple Vinca flowers
About 2 miles from Aberffraw we got caught in a thunderstorm and got pelted by hailstones and heavier rain than I've ever experienced before. The Fitbit recorded 16.8 miles on that walk.
