SALGA and Pickards Field

SALGA stands for Swindon Allotment and Leisure Gardens Association was formed in 1962 for the benefit of gardeners in Swindon. They are a fabulous organisation, and for £5 a year subscription it's well worth joining. If you click on the link, you'll find the huge range of things they do, like monthly talks, newsletters, trips, shows and they also distribute Kings seed catalogues with fantastic reductions of 45% on seed orders. If you're not a member, I'd urge you to join.
Until recently, I had participated in ordering seeds, and been to a couple of talks, but I hadn't visited the shop at Pickard's Field allotment site, seed catalogues had to be collected this year, so I made my first visit there a couple of weeks ago. The site is on the left hand side of the road when driving from Ferndale Road to Pinehurst Circle; I drove past it the first time, it's just a driveway between large gates.
The shop is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays 10am-12noon, so if you want to have a look and join, there's still just time to do so before it closes for the winter at the end of October.
I took a few photos of the site which had a lot of tomatoes and dahlias in evidence
and a few more
tomatoes and very tall corn in the background
I rather liked this lone Roma tomato:
and this large container of sludge, presumably nettles, comfrey and other Bob Flowerdew type additives to make a fertiliser
And remember it's not too late to take advantage of the discounted seed orders.
