For the first three nights of our garden tour, we stayed on a farm in the delightful village of Lighthorne which according to the OS map, wasn't far from Compton Verney. On The third day of the tour, a Sunday, we walked in the morning to Compton Verney, appreciated the Capability Brown landscapes in the parkland surrounding the rather beautifully placed house. Walking along the valley is surely the best way to reach Compton Verney, this is the view of the parkland:
and the house:
and as you get nearer
it seems that if arriving by car, the car park is a short distance from the house, and visitors have to cross the bridge to reach the house
Keen to visit NGS Open Gardens in the afternoon, we'd started early from our B&B, arriving at Compton Verney around 10.25am, not realising beforehand that it doesn't open until 11am, we didn't wait around until they opened because we had missed the Ravilious exhibition by about two weeks, and needed to be back in Lighthorne by 1pm.
We had a quick look at the rather lovely meadows, open next Sunday 8 July for a special Meadows Day from 10.30am.
Meadows are quite difficult to photograph, there's often quite a lot of grass with a few flowers
I think these photos give quite a good idea of the success that has been made of developing them. If you're in the area, next Sunday sounds like good fun at Compton Verney.
On the walk we came across quite a few of the vintage motorcyclists taking part in the Banbury Run they had also dressed up for the occasion in pre 1930 clothing, hairstyles and men's facial hair. This couple were staying in our B&B and posed before setting off on the Banbury Run:
I thought they looked fabulous, they enjoyed taking part but didn't win any prizes for their speed, motorbike or their appearance.
