Looking for a route from Pardshaw Hall to Cockermouth, there is a great route over Whin Fell to Low Lorton and an easy walk from there to Cockermouth. I noticed the interesting gate posts with holes in near Low Lorton, these were used before gates when metal rods were pushed through the holes, some were round and others square. More about gateposts, including one dated 1799 can be found here
Here's the view of Kirk Fell from Low Lorton
Along a path 2 miles north of Low Lorton, we came across Stanger Spa, a saline spring in a now roofless building, there's a lovely piece in the Journal of Lorton and Fells Local History Society here
about the spa
photos are a bit dark.
It's got a wrought iron gate which says Stanger Spa on it.
The walk along the river Cocker was lovely
and there were more examples of gate posts with holes in them
wouldn't they look nice in the garden?
The walk back from Cockermouth through Eaglesfield and Deanscales was a bit tortuous, but at least we avoided the main road. The pub at Eaglesfield has sadly now closed. The house below is in Deanscales, it's roof could be seen from across the fields, I've mislaid the name, so can't find anything about it.
