The Big Vertical Walk up Scafell Pike

Having accomplished the big walk the previous day, the next logical thing was to tackle Scafell Pike, the biggest vertical challenge in the Lake District, and in fact in England. The easiest way to get to the top of Scafell is from Wasdale Head, although we started from the top of Wastwater, parking in the National Trust car park. The drive seemed to take us to such a remote place, we traveled for what seemed ages, that I thought we'd have the place to ourselves, however it was thronging with people. Some of them in groups and possibly doing the three peaks challenge.
The route we took was the one carefully described here: https://www.walklakes.co.uk/walk_158.html
It's absolutely fabulous, but like walking up stairs for 2 hours. The views of Wast Water on the way up are breathtaking:
and the weather was glorious when we started at about 11am
however having looked up weather on Scafell at the beginning of the week, I'd failed to see the pattern, mist falls on Scafell in April after about 1pm.In the photo below it's beginning to descend
and here we're about to walk into it.
We were about 30 minutes from the top, at a resting place where lots of people had stopped to eat sandwiches when we decided since we couldn't see the wonderful views, that we'd save the summit for another day, and turned back.
It was great to get out of the mist, although there was some regret we didn't get right to the top.
The views on the way down were great.
Down near the car park, the gorse was fabulous
Hoping to have another go at getting to the top next year.
