Lazing around reading on the balcony one morning, we became aware that there was some activity in the 'garden' below, a bunch of bananas was being cut down. I hadn't even thought about how this was done, but know now. I'll start with the photo of the guy with the bunch of bananas:
and work back to the process of cutting it down. Firstly a knife was inserted into a bamboo stick, and then the stem of the banana holding the bunch was cut, you can just about see the process below:
then both men involved caught the bunch between them
I hadn't thought that you can't let the bananas hit the ground, or they'll be damaged.
Meanwhile here's Lyn on the balcony:
and a view out to Sandy Island from the balcony
and the balcony from the front garden.
Local minibuses are a fabulous way to get around the Carribean, and on Carriacou, they are eager to stop anywhere to pick you up, so in addition to walking around, you can reach other places via a minibus, with the added advantage that you can chat to people you're sitting next to.
We visited Tyrrel Bay and Harvey Vale where we saw this fabulous plant, seen all over the place in a garden:
and here's a fantastically bright photo below, taken whilst trying and failing to get a decent photo of a bananaquit, if you click on the link, you can see Annette Vogel has taken some fabulous photos of birds on Carriacou.
And on our last evening at L'Esterre, I took a few photos of the sunset at Black Sand Beach, I've added them all in sequence:
